Frequently Asked Questions

What is a commission, exactly?

Commissions are contracts for custom work. Commissioned baskets make wonderful gifts, as they are highly customizable, such as including monograms or specialized accents.

If you are interested in a specific basket that you'd like me to make particularly for you, reach out to me through the Contacts page.

You should have at least a general idea of what you'd like, or provide a photo. From there, I will lead you through the process to plan your art piece.  There is no charge for inquiring.

How much does a basket cost?

This is highly variable based on what type/size basket you choose, and it's complexity. Nantucket baskets require much skill and quality materials, so they are not cheap. But they will grow in beauty with age, and will last for generations.

On initial inquiry, given the type of basket you're interested in, I can estimate a rough price range. When the basket planning phase is complete, I will provide a firm quote.

How long does it take?

Perfection does take time!

The lead time depends on 3 things: materials availability (lead time), the size and complexity of the basket (labor), and my availability. I generally have 1 or more commissions in the queue.

On inquiry I may be able to give you a rough timeline, but that may vary due to unforeseen events. The shortest lead time is 3 months, but it can be as much as a year

What does planning involve?

Planning usually involves a number of emails or (preferably) telephone calls. It consists of Q&A on the aesthetics of the piece. What size/shape? What color/type of wood do you prefer for rims and bases? Hardwood staves or cane? Handle type? What accents would you like? Any engraving? Do you want a fabric liner? Do you have a price point we need to work within? etc.

I will explain each question and help you refine the details to your particular taste, and will make sure the project is achievable and that it will be beautiful.

How does payment work?

I require a non-refundable deposit for materials up front. Balance is due when the basket is complete, prior to shipment.

What happens while I'm waiting?

I will keep you updated on the basket progress: when materials are ordered, and when they arrive and I'm able to start. If you like, I can share photos during construction, and certainly will give you a sneak peek photo of the finished product with the final invoice.

What if I want to cancel the commission for some reason?

My policy is that if you cancel, the deposit is nonrefundable. In the event the cancellation is early, or the basket has not been overly customized and can be offered for general sale, I may, at my discretion, provide a partial refund of the materials.

No cancellations are permitted once the basket is complete.
